Supervising Attorney - Daniel Thetford

Dan Thetford joined the Illinois Torture Inquiry and Relief Commission as an Attorney Supervisor in October 2023. Prior to his work at TIRC, Dan worked for four years at the City of Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability as a Major Case Investigator and Supervising Investigator, leading investigations into excessive force, false statements and officer collusion, and many other types of police misconduct. Dan has previously worked in immigration law and he began his legal career in criminal defense, including as a Public Defender for the State of Colorado. While earning his Juris Doctor (cum laude) from Northern Illinois University, he also held highly impactful internships with the Illinois Innocence Project and the Will County Public Defender’s office (both in the Investigations unit and in criminal court). Dan holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from Illinois State University and he is a 5-year veteran of the U.S. Navy.
